He was born the son of Abraham and Sarah (Nelson) Nelson. He attended Mineral Point schools, and at age 17, worked with Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), where he helped build Interstate State Park, which was the first state park in the St. Croix Falls. He then worked as a hired hand on farms in the Waldwick area.
He married Wynona Reed on Sept. 1, 1942, at the Lutheran Parthonage in Dodgeville.
He was a janitor at Mineral Point High School from 1955-1973, and worked for Wisconsin Power and Light as a meter reader from 1973 until retiring in 1984. He was a 40 year member of the IOOF Lodge No. 1.
He was also a member of the Hope Lutheran Church in Mineral Point.
He enjoyed camping, fishing and opening weekend of deer camp. In his later years, he loved to sit on his front porch and read westerns.
Abe is survived by his wife of 61 years, a son and his wife, three daughters and their husbands, six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, two sisters, a brother-in-law, and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, Florence Halverson, Bernice Fine and Evelyn Johnson.
