Crash kills motorcyclist

William Hulet 2nd to die on county roads this week

A 37-year-old motorcyclist became the second person to die on Howard County roads this week.

William R. Hulet, 37, West Middleton, died instantly when his blue and white 1989 Suzuki SX7 slammed into a red 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck at the intersection of 600 West and 200 North at 2:35 p.m. Friday.

Deputy Coroner Jeff Stout said Hulet was pronounced dead at the scene of massive head injuries.

The driver of the truck, Edmund J. Hill, 71, was traveling south on 600 West, stopped at the stop sign and continued on into the path of the westbound motorcycle.

The impact spun the full-size truck around in the middle of the intersection. Hill was not injured.

Sheriff Marty Talbert said the motorcycle struck the left side of the truck's rear wheel, killing Hulet instantly.

"It did appear Hulet tried to stop and laid the bike down to try to avoid the collision," Talbert said.

The speed of the bike is not known, but accident reconstructionist Bob Good of the Indiana State Police Peru Post is assisting the sheriff department in determining the speed.

This is the second fatal in three days in Howard County.
