He was the son of David T. Ayers and Mary Hall Ayers.
Per the 1900 Census for Galveston, Texas, he married Letitia E. Whitaker (1871-1945) about 1891.
They were the parents of two children with one living.

Per The Atlanta Journal published Tuesday, April 17, 1945, Letitia W. Ayers died on Monday, April 16, 1945 in Atlanta, Georgia. Funeral services and burial was in Boston.

Death Claims Walter F. Ayers
Leavenworth, Kansas, August 23. Walter Francis Ayers, 71, father-in-law of Major F.L. Christian of Fort Leavenworth, died last night. Mr. and Mrs. Ayers had come here four days ago from Fort Monroe, Virginia to establish their residence and be near Major and Mrs. Christian. Before his retirement Mr. Ayers was a salesman. He was a Mason and a member of the Knights Templar.

He was born February 5, 1865 in Goliad, Texas. Survivors include Mrs. Ayers; a daughter Mrs. Christian and a sister Mrs. Emily Thornton of Louisiana. Funeral services will be Monday at the post chapel at Fort Leavenworth. Cremation will follow.

The Ayers family was well known in Galveston and Mr. Ayers lived here until 13 or 14 yeas ago. While he lived here he was prominent in Masonic affairs. His daughter, Mrs. Christian, was Miss Eleanor Ayers of Galveston.
