Dick was a graduate of Mount Vernon High School. He had been an employee of the former Jewell Milk Company in Mount Vernon from 1937 to 1945 and was featured as the "Milk Man" in the documentary honoring Mount Vernon as the All American City. Dick had owned and operated Bartlett's Appliance Store in Mount Vernon from 1946 to 1958. He may be remembered for his "crazy" promotions and contests … "let me give you sixty quarts of strawberries with the purchase of an Amana freezer". After selling the store in 1958, Dick worked as a furniture manufacturers' representative traveling the state of Ohio. He retired at age 62 at King's Gate Club in Nokomis, Florida, and traveled extensively with his wife, Helen. He was a former member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Mount Vernon.
