Titus Brubaker, 100, thresherman.

Titus H. Brubaker, 100, of Moravian Manor, 300 W. Lemon St., Lititz, PA, died there Friday following an illness of several months. He formerly resided at 2018 Marietta Pike, Rohrerstown, PA.

He was the husband of Erma Weber Brubaker for 40 years.

Brubaker was one of the last operators of steam-driven thrashing machines in the United States. He was an active thresherman for more than 50 years. He owned and restored many thrashing machine engines, purchasing his first at age 16 and his last at age 95.

In a 1989 newspaper article, he described the life of a thrashing machine operator.

"We worked for an average of 60 farmers a season. One year we serviced 72 farms. For 25 years, we serviced the same farms from Rohrerstown to Lancaster and in some parts of Manheim Township."

"Those were good times. The farmers looked forward to the thrashing machines operators coming, preparing for weeks, and they fed us well. They gave us the best food."

In the 1950s, Brubaker saw the end of the steam-driven machine era approaching and started his own electrical contracting business in Rohrerstown. He retired in 1972 at the age of 83.

He was a founding member and the oldest member of the Rough and Tumble Engineers Historical Museum, Kinzers, PA, where several of his steam engines were on display.

Brubaker was a graduate of Franklin and Marshall Academy and a member of Grace Lutheran Church. He had also served on the former East Hempfield Township School Board.

The son of the late Andrew Herr Brubaker and Mary G. Hess Brubaker, he was raised on a farm in Rohrerstown deeded to his family by William Penn.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Titus H. Brubaker, Jr., Brooksville, Fla.; a step-daughter, Betty, wife of Jerry Miller, Newark, Del.; two grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
