A local boy, whose battle with a rare genetic disease often rallied the community around his family, is dead.

Michael Terral, 9, of West, died Monday. He had been hospitalized after catching a virus. Fever from the virus, combined with complications from his disease, led to his death.

A visitation with his family will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Aderhold Funeral Home in West. Funeral services will be 3:30 p.m. Friday at Antioch Community Church in Waco, followed by burial at Moore Cemetery near Chalk Bluff.

Michael's family first reached out to the community for help about five years ago when they were having difficulty getting his medication paid for by the state. For several years afterward, the family's situation continued to be chronicled by local news media, with local residents often chipping in money to help.

Michael was born with a disorder that made his body unable to properly break down proteins. Left untreated, any protein he consumed was converted into ammonia, which is lethal at high levels.

Michael took numerous medications but still became sick often. Until two years ago, he was hospitalized or treated in the emergency room frequently. Lately, Michael had been doing better, said his mother, Jennifer Terral. Before this week, he hadn't been to the hospital since June 2006, she said.

Michael had been looking forward to starting third grade at West Elementary School, his mother said. But most of all, she said, he loved hanging out with his father, Dustin; 11-year-old brother, Eric; and 13-year-old sister, Kassie.

A trust fund has been set up at Bank of America to help with funeral expenses. Those wishing to donate can do so at any Bank of America location.
