A native of Sellersburg, he was a retired millwright for the old P. Lorillard Tobacco Co. in Louisville, a Marine veteran of World War II, a former member of the old Greenville Optimist Club and a Methodist.
Survivors include his wife, the former Wanda Barnard; two sons, Mark and Greg Werncke, both of Greenville; a sister, Edith Appell of Sellersburg; and five grandchildren.
Visitation: Monday, Aug. 27, from 2 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, Aug. 28, after 9 a.m. at Kraft Funeral Service in New Albany.
Funeral: Tuesday, Aug. 28, at noon at the funeral home with burial, including military honors, in Greenlawn Cemetery in Greenville.
The family suggests memorial gifts to Hospice of Southern Indiana.
