Henry Howard Hertzsch, Jr, passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2020, in his home surrounded by his wife, daughter, son and two older sisters. Henry was born in Hartford, CT, in 1947, to Henry Howard Hertzsch Sr and Madeline Anna Talbot.

Henry graduated from Bluefield High School in 1966. Henry was drafted into the United States Army in 1970 and left for Germany. After returning home, he attended Springfield College and completed a two-year auto mechanic program. In 1973, Henry drove his ’57 Chevy, that he fixed up with his friend, Dave, across country to Utah. In December of ’76, Henry started working at BYU in the grounds department. He performed many different jobs in that department, but was most proud of his compost (or poop, as his kids would call it). Henry retired from BYU, in 2015, after 39 years.

In April of 1977, Henry met Debra Palmer, the love of his life. They dated for a year and got engaged in April of ’78 and were married that October in the Manti Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1979, Henry and Debi had their first child, David; Madeline came along in ’81, and James was born in ’84.

Henry was drafted by the U.S. Army, in 1970, serving in Germany and the Vietnam War. Continuing his military service, he joined the Army National Guard in 2003. He was called up and deployed to Kuwait as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, from February 2004 to February 2005. He had 30 years total military service. Henry loved the friends he made in the military and would always stop and spend time talking with them, whenever he bumped into them.

He spent his retired years with family and friends. He enjoyed working on and racing cars in his youth and was proud to show off his trophy from the Connecticut Dragway. Henry loved to serve others, as well as his country. In addition to time spent in the military, he served as Scout Master, and was always willing to lend a hand when needed. He could fix anything with tools (maybe not the right way), and get it working. Henry loved cars and was always going off to car shows on weekends, whenever possible.

Henry is survived by his wife, Debra (Palmer) Hertzsch; sisters, Judy (Donald) Seaton and Glady Nolan; children: David (Francesca) Hertzsch, Madeline (Bill) Roth, James Hertzsch; grandchildren: Toby Roth, Courtney Roth, Christopher Hertzsch, Damon Hertzsch, and Arcadia Hertzsch; and several nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws, and great friends.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 8, 2020, at the Kolob LDS 8th Ward church building on 840 South 400 East in Springville, UT. There will be a viewing, at the church, from 10-10:45 a.m. with the funeral at 11 a.m. Graveside services, with Military Honors, will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Springville, UT.
