John Porter Akin, son Of A. B. Akin and Nancy Ellen Hodges Akin was born and grew up on a farm near Akinsville, in northern Morgan County. He was the eldest of six brothers and sisters: Mary Jane Berkey, Robert, Thomas, Ora, Jesse, and Eulalia McFarland.

John Porter married Cynthia Adeline Moon, who lived on a farm in the Mr. Carmel Church neighborhood, south of Syracuse. John and Cynthia made their home on the old Moon homestead, where he farmed and raised livestock. They became active in church and community activities.

Five children was born to John and Cynthia Akin: Maudie, Bernie, Clint, Bethel and Elbert.

In later years, John moved to his parent's home near Akinsville, and lived there until his death in May, 1940.
