Anna's father died in the Civil War, and she had to learn to survive by herself at an early age.

In 1875 Anna Sophie Ohlerking, age 13 (b. 1862), was living with Carl Miller (b. 1813 in Prussia) and Sophia Miller (b. 1825 in Prussia), her brother, Edward Ohlerking, age 11 (b. 1864), and their son Carl Miller, age 8 (b. 1867), in Arlington Township, Sibley County. Apparently Carl Miller married Sophia Ohlerking between 1864 and 1866. In 1885 Anna and Edward Ohlerking and Charles Miller Jr. were living in the household of Sophia Miller in Grafton Township. Living nearby was Louis Gums. Apparently Carl Miller died between 1875 and 1885.

Ludwig (Louis) Rudolph Gums married Anna Sophie Ohlerking of Arlington on January 9, 1891, in Grafton, a township near Henderson. The wedding announcement appeared on Friday, January 16, 1891, in the Sibley County Independent, "Marriage licenses have been issued to the following: . . . Louis Gums and Annie Ohlerking . . ."

/o Louis R. Gums. Children include Albert William (1891-1957), Anna Louise (1892-1893), Ida Minnie Weins (1894-1960, buried at Ft. Snelling), Fred Herman (1897-1956), Henry George (1900-1983), Ollie Emmett (1902-1988), and Emma Elsie (1905-1955).
