George received critical injuries in an automobile accident while returning to his home from Arapahoe, Nebraska. Accompanied by his son, LaVern, they were coming home after the death of George's mother, Mrs Louella Mather. The cause of the accident is said to have been the swinging out of the rear of a semi-trailer and the car met it on a narrow bridge on a curve. The Mather car was sheared in two and Mr Mather, who was driving, received a crushed chest and severe head lacerations. LaVern received minor injuries.
