Zerviah Pelton was born in Connecticut in 1803, the daughter of Josiah Pelton and his wife Eunice Doan. She married Russel Andrus on April 7, 1835 in Middlebury, Wyoming County, New York. Shortly after their marriage, Zerviah and Russel Andrus moved to Sterling Township (now Sterling Heights), Macomb County Michigan. They had a family of ten children. Their first child, a daughter, was born in New York state, and the other nine children (7 boys and 2 girls) were all born in Michigan. Zerviah's husband died in 1850 in Michigan. After Russel's death, two of her sons, Isaac and Chancy, went to California for the gold rush. Four of her children moved to Nebraska: Mary Elmina, Horace, Dayton, and Asahel.
