Mary Wheeler, a loving wife, aunt, cousin and friend, passed away in her home in Katy, Texas, on Monday, July 6, 2020. She is now in her eternal home with those whom she loved and went before her.
Mary Pigford Rivenbark was born in Metter, GA, on October 5, 1939, to Sallie McGauley Rivenbark and Pigford L. Rivenbark. She graduated from Georgia Southern University with her teaching degree and continued her education at the University of Georgia, earning her Master’s degree.
She spent over 40 years teaching in Baton Route, LA, Atlanta, GA and Katy, TX, and also taught in Saudi Arabia when her husband’s job transferred them there. She was not only a teacher, but was a principal of a high school in Atlanta, GA. After Mary’s retirement, she continued to work as a substitute teacher in a school near her home in Katy.
Mary enjoyed teaching and touched her students’ lives with a colorful and challenging approach to learning. For many years she planned and accompanied her students on trips to Washington, D.C., and visited many of the places they studied in social studies and history while in her classroom. Mary loved our country and wanted to instill that love and patriotism into her students’ lives.
Mary and her husband Dale had a special fondness for Welsh Corgis and through the years adopted many Corgi rescues into their home.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Royce Dale Wheeler; her mother, Sallie McGauley Rivenbark; father, Pigford L. Rivenbark; and brothers William Lanier Rivenbark and James Calvin Rivenbark.
She is survived by her nephews, Michael David Rivenbark (Rita), Wayne Candler Rivenbark (Peggy), Sam Rivenbark (Bonnie) and niece MaryAnne Scott (Bill) and their families, as well as many cousins and their families.
The family would like to express their utmost appreciation for the prayers and support of caring hearts from many of Mary’s family members, friends and especially to her neighbors in Katy, Texas, who have reached out to her with daily visits and meals.
