Russel Andrus was born in Vermont to Isaac Andrus and his wife Clarissa Harris. In 1814 he joined the New York Militia for the War of 1812. Unfortunately, he became very seriously ill at Fort Erie in Canada and had to be brought home to Middlebury, Wyoming County, New York by his father. Russel Andrus married Zerviah Pelton in Middlebury, Wyoming County, New York on April 7, 1825. They had ten children -- 3 girls and 7 boys. Their first child, a daughter, was born in New York state and all of their other children were born in Sterling Township, Macomb County, Michigan. They moved to Sterling, Michigan in 1825 and Russel lived there for the rest of his life . Despite his very poor health following the War of 1812, he was a farmer. Fortunately, he had sons who helped him with the manual labor involved in farming. According to his War of 1812 Pension Record, Russel Andrus died in Sterling on September 10, 1850 at the age of 57. According to pension-related testimony by his brother Elon Andrus, Russel's funeral took place on September 12, 1850 in Sterling. The cemetery is not specifically mentioned in Elon's testimony, but it is very likely that he was buried here at Utica Cemetery because he has other Andrus and Hotham relatives in this cemetery.
