Tennie Smith first married Lowry Hawkins on 8 Jan 1887 in Rhea County, Tennessee. Their children were Maynard, Ethel, John, Willie Andrew, Alice, and Carrie Hawkins. Lowry died May 27, 1901 in a dust explosion at the New Richland mine of the Dayton Coal & Iron company, at Dayton, Tennessee. (He is listed as Lewry Hawkins in the newspaper, and as J. E. Hawkins at the cemetery.)

Tennie next married John Henry Curtis on April 20, 1906 in Rhea County, Tennessee. In 1920 they were living in Alabama City, Etowah County, Alabama.

Tennessee Jane (Tennie)'s obituary was published in the Gadsden Times on 7 July 1925:

Mrs. Tennie Curtis, 58, died at her home at 22 Dozier avenue, Alabama City, last night at 11 o'clock, following a long illness of heart trouble. The funeral will be held at 1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, the services to be conducted by Rev. R.V. Locke, pastor of the Dwight Baptist church. The burial will follow at Clayton cemetery. Mrs. Curtis is survived by three daughters and three sons. She is said to have been a mighty good woman, a devoted mother and a considerate neighbor. Her loss will be keenly felt in her community, according to acquaintances.
