Mildred Margaret Vogel, one of four children of Johanna Katherine (Mass) and Edward Julius Miller, was born on March 21, 1913, on her parents' farm north of Silver City, Iowa in rural Pottawattamie County. She grew up on the family farm and attended Evergreen Community School through the eighth grade.
Mildred later worked as a shipping clerk at Woolworth's in Omaha, Nebraska. On December 20, 1947, Mildred and Earl Joseph Vogel, Jr. were married in Papillion, Nebraska. They lived and farmed in the Silver City area before moving to Los Angeles, California. Earl worked for the Richland Service Station and Mildred worked at Leach Corporation as a line supervisor and was involved with relay inspections for the first moon landing. After 20 years of living in California, Mildred and Earl returned to Silver City, where she worked part time in the Ord Grocery Store until she retired.
Mildred was a member of the Silver City United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and the Silver City Cemetery Association. She enjoyed flower gardening, needlework, cooking and reading. She was especially fond of dogs.
Mildred and Earl were married 49 years when Earl passed away on April 5, 1997. Mildred continued to make her home in Silver City until moving to the Amelia House in Council Bluffs, Iowa in 2005.
Mildred passed away on April 1, 2008 at Glen Haven Home in Glenwood, Iowa, at the age of 95 years and 10 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Earl; brothers, Alfred Miller and his wife Ona Lee, and George Miller; sister Velma Schultz and her husband Eldon; nephews Gary Miller and Rodney Miller. Mildred is survived by her niece Beverly Dashner and her husband Philip of Malvern, IA; sister-in-law Viva Miller; nephews Richard Miller and his wife Ruth and Dennis Miller and his wife Laura, all of Silver City, IA; other relatives and friends.
