Emma Laura Gums married Frederick William Boelter on December 26, 1902 in Posen Township, Yellow Medicine, Minnesota. Frederick was from Minnesota, and his parents were from Germany. He was thirty-two, and she was twenty-one. This is not the first time Fred Boelter appeared in her life. They may have known each other for some time. On Friday, August 4, 1893, the Sibley County Independent states, "Fred Boelter arrived here [Henderson] from St. Paul Friday and will remain until after the harvest." The 1900 census for Posen shows them both as servants for the Henry Warnke family. They had two children while living there; Gertrude (b. August 25, 1907, d. October 9, 1973), who married Leo Anthony Morawczynski, later changed to Moraski, and Erwin G. (b. January 12, 1914, d. March 7, 1935), who died of pneumonia.
