After finishing two years, she joined the US Navy as a WAVE. She attended UCLA for graduate work (1947-1949), graduating with a California Teaching Certificate. Her first teaching Job was in Coalinga as a PE teacher, where she met and fell in love with Paul Gannatal, the junior college baseball and football coach. During the early years in Ventura, besides caring for her young family, Janet supported her husband's football career attending football games and tutoring athletes as well as being his golfing partner. In her childrearing years, Janet contributed to her community as PTA member and president, was active with her children in Bluebirds, Campfire Girls and 4H. In 2015, after her husband had died, she moved to the Townehouse where she lived in an independent apartment until an illness, followed by a hospitalization, required a move. She lived her final years in Vancouver, WA.

She was married to her husband for 64 years, during which they saw their 4 children graduate from college and marry. She is survived by her 4 children, 13 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
