James graduated from Cookeville HS in 1986 and immediately, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy for 6 years during Dessert Storm. He received a degree in Graphic Arts at Platt College in Huntington Beach, California as well as receiving a Bachelors in Interdisciplinary Studies at Tennessee Tech in December 2019.
James enjoyed the sea, golfing, music, motorcycle riding, smoking cigars, a good stout beer, carpentry, building things, fixing anything with a motor or electronics, sketching, camping, boating and watching movies with the family. More importantly, he enjoyed and loved his family.
He was also the rarest of birds in that he loved shopping for bargains with or without his wife.
He was the son of Joel Cowan and Dorothy Medlin Cowan of Cookeville, TN.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Dylcia (Young) Cowan.

A Celebration of Life service was held Sunday, August 2, 2020 at the Crest Lawn Funeral Home.
Inurnment followed in Crest Lawn Memorial Cemetery.
