U.S. Congressman. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, he was involved with various newspaper publishers in Iowa, (1891-94). He studied finance at George Washington University and was personal secretary to US Representative George M. Curtis and US Senator William B. Allison of Iowa, (1895-1905). In 1905, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-ninth, Sixtieth and Sixty-first Congresses, serving until 1911. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he was appointed as private secretary to President William H. Taft, in 1910. He was also president of the First National Bank of Davenport, Iowa, (1911-29), executive secretary of the Republican National Senatorial Committee in 1930 and a public utility executive, (1931-45). He died suddenly at age 77 while on a train trip to Cincinnati, Ohio.
