E.E. Houk, son of US Senator Leondias Campbell Houk of Knoxville, was born in Anderson County, Tennessee. Elmer was commissioned a Lieutenant of the 6th US Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish American War and served in the continental US and in Puerto Rico. He was a lawyer by profession and early in his career a clerk to the US District Attorney. He went on the be the assistant district attorney for Shelby county, Tennessee and the editor for the Commercial Appeal Newspaper in Memphis, TN. E.E. Houk was called to active service, received his commission as a Captain, and served at several bases in the US during World War I. He died at General Hospital #1 in New York City, New York.
