James was the son of Abraham Kimberlin, Jr., and Elizabeth Spurgeon. When James was 4 years old, his father Abraham died in Henry Co., KY. Guardians were appointed for the children; David Adams was appointed for James Lewis, and his mother Elizabeth Spurgeon Kimberlin for his two sisters Nancy and Eliza (Henry County Court Records, Vol 5, p. 528, Vol 6, p. 375, Vol 7, p. 215, 294.)

On 28 Feb 1839, James married Nancy Louise Lamb in Lawrence Co., IL. Record of marriage of James L. Kimberlawn [sic] and Nancy L. Lamb is found in Vol 00B, page 0130, Lawrence County Marriage Record (from Illinois Statewide Marriage Index 1763-1900). James and Nancy were the parents of 8 children: Sarah, Lydia, John, a baby boy unnamed, Martha, Malinda (who died young), Mary and Margret.

James L. Kimberlin purchased a land patent in Macon Co., IL, on 16 Nov 1849 for $1.25 an acre, described as follows: Lot number one of the northeast quarter of Section 5 in Township 15 North of Range 4 East in the District of lands subject to sale at Vandalia, Illinois, containing 80 acres (total $100, Vol 147, page 065).

After Nancy died in 1875, James moved some of the family first to Joplin, Missouri, then Jackson, Jasper Co., MO, and finally to Derden, Hill County, Texas. Some of the children remained in Illlinois for a few years but joined the rest of the family in Missouri. The oldest girls had married men from Illinois, but they and their families moved with the Kimberlin family to Missouri. However, they remained behind while James, son John and his wife Carrie, daughters Mary with husband William Mabe and Margret and husband William Hancock came on to Texas by 1888. James lived with his son John and daughters until his death on 27 Dec 1895. He is buried in the Margret/William Hancock family plot in Derden Cemetery. He was 75 years old.
