James Smith was born on September 27, 1909 to Percy and Angeline Middaugh Smith in St. Paul, Minnesota. He had an older brother and sister, and would have a younger brother. Shortly after his younger brother's birth, the family moved to Southeast Minneapolis, where James attended Tuttle School and Marshall High School. He married Melba Fetzer and served in WWII. After the war, he owned a tavern on Como Avenue Southeast and then took a position as the Minneapolis manager of Western Transportation, a freight firm. They lived for many years in North Minneapolis and later moved to Golden Valley, a near suburb. Jim and Melba never had any children. Jim died on December 13, 1995, Melba in 1998, they are both buried at Crystal Lake Cemetery in Minneapolis.
