Lillian Mai Goldtrap Harper
[Obituary from the Leaf Chronicle (Clarksville, TN) dated September 6, 2007]

Lillian Mai Goldtrap Harper, 83, Adams, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007, at her residence.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Stroudsville Church of Christ with Darrell Blankenship and George Goldtrap officiating.

Burial will be in Bellwood Cemetery, Adams. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service Saturday at the church.

Neal-Tarpley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Harper passed on to be with her husband of 54 years, Ewing Harper, who had preceded her six years ago. She was a loving wife, good mother and friend to all.

She was born in Nashville May 6, 1924, to George and Audrey Goldtrap. She was a graduate of North High School (class of 1940) and class valedictorian, David Lipscomb College, and George Peabody School for Teachers as a Home Economics major. She taught high school in Donelson before marrying her sweetheart, Ewing Harper, upon his return from World War II. She moved to Knoxville to be with him as he attended college on the G.I. Bill.

She taught school in the Knoxville system until she delivered twins two years later. After that, she had her hands full. Returning to Nashville, she took an active part in her husband's real estate business while attending to the lives of her children. Two more children followed. She threw the best birthday parties in the neighborhood for her kids, with creative themes and everyone in costumes.

Acceding to her husband's wishes, she cheerfully moved to the country (though a city girl) and took up residence in Robertson County in the middle of a large cattle farm. She easily made friends with the neighbors and was well liked for her generous nature.

Active in the Stroudsville Church of Christ, she taught Sunday school and Wednesday night classes for many years. A great cook, she could throw together a quick and tasty meal for surprise lunch guests, a common occurrence with a husband who liked to invite people and bring them unannounced. She was never defeated by the challenge of an upgrade. By the time they exited their vehicle and walked up to the door, a cake or pie was assembled and put into the oven, new side dishes were on the stove, and cloth napkins were on the table.

She loved to travel, going to Europe and the Pacific with her husband on five tours before starting to visit the United States on bus trips. After the passing of her husband six years ago, she was able to cruise to Alaska with a sister, and the Caribbean and two cruises through the Panama Canal with a good friend and companion, Joyce Clayman.

Though her health had begun to decline in recent years, she tried to be helpful to all. She will be missed by many friends and neighbors. For the last six months she has been cared for by Asera Care Hospice group, who have been so very helpful and considerate. The family appreciates their efforts and compassion.

She is survived by two sisters, Sarah Nugent and Polly Jones of Nashville; a brother, George Goldtrap Jr. of Ormond-by-the-Sea; four children, Dan Harper of Nashville, Don Harper of Seattle, Robert Harper and Julia Harper Boyd of Adams; and two grandchildren, Sarah and Michael Boyd.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Stroudsville Church of Christ, 1531 Stroudsville Road, Adams, TN 37010 or Asera Care, 1539-C Ashland City Road, Clarksville, TN 37040.

Arrangements entrusted to Neal-Tarpley Funeral Home, 1510 Madison St., Clarksville, TN 37040, 645-6488. Online condolences can be sent to www.neal-tarpley.com.
