Teacher, Educator

Dennis was an educator extraordinaire. He taught in the Penn-Harris-Madison public school system, in St. Joseph County, Indiana, for 33 years before retiring and moving to Florida. When he retired, he was the coordinator of elementary enrichment programs for the entire PHM school system.

In the words of a colleague:

Denny was a respected colleague, mentor, and friend. We often went to him for his advice, point of view, and support. Working with Denny was fun. Denny had a kind and generous heart and was always willing to help a staff member with a need. Most importantly, Denny's students benefited from his caring and generosity. He bought a lot of coats, boots/shoes, clothes, Christmas presents, and school lunches so that no student of his would ever go without. Denny was an exceptional teacher who was admired by both students and parents. At the end of each school year, my second graders would say, "I hope I get Mr. C next year." A former teacher told this story from when she taught in an adjoining room to Denny at Osceola School: One of her students announced, "We have the best room in the whole school!" She asked him why, expecting to hear a wonderful compliment, and he replied, "Because we have a door to Mr. C's room!"

In the words of a student:

I had Mr C. for 2nd and 3rd grade at Osceola School nearly forty years ago. He was a teacher who truly cared about his students. His warmth, enthusiasm, and wit turned going to school from a chore to something I looked forward to. That foundation helped me for the rest of my life, so I will always owe Dennis a debt of gratitude. I hope he knew the impact he had on many of us.

Dennis grew up in Mishawaka, where he attended St. Bavo Elementary School before graduating from Mishawaka High School in 1968. His university education was at Indiana University, at the South Bend campus.
