Last Confederate Veteran of Mobile County.
Nov 30, 1842-1942
Co. B 53 Ga. Inf
Erected by Raphael Semmes Camp 1206 SCV. and Mobile Bay District U.D.C.Last Confederate Veteran of Mobile County. He served with Company B 53rd Georgia Infantry. His date of birth differs on his Civil War Service Marker, November 30, 1842 from his actual date of birth, December 9, 1842. His daughter, Anna Leola (Parker) Bolton, personally provided me his birth date from the family Bible and later put the same date on his death certificate.

He was originally born William Hamilton Parker who shows up on a Federal Census as Hamilton Parker and who at some point changed his name to William Sam Parker. His marriage to Saletia (Saleta Nix) identified him as "Willis", but Willis was a brother of his born in 1850. Since these were "unschooled" people, I believe that the person who documented the marriage heard the name "Willis" and thought that was the person being married and none of the family members could read, so it stood. Might be another reason, but that's the best I've been able to figure out pondering this for years. At any rate, regardless to whom Saletia was "officially" married, she had children by and is buried next to William Sam Parker not Willis. Willis Parker and Frances Marion Oliver, husband of William's & Willis' sister Nancy Clementine (Parker) Oliver, signed as witnesses to the marriage. Their signatures were by "X" Mark, confirming their inability to read the document.

He was also called the "Judge". He wasn't a judge, but he was highly respected so friends, family, neighbors, etc. always sought him out for advice.
