Kenneth Douglas Calloway was born to Rudolph James and Mary Lee Foster Calloway.
He was a lifelong resident of Palestine, Texas. He spent his early adulthood in the Navy, serving on the aircraft carrier USS Bairoko during the Korean War, One of the most memorable events from his military days was participating in Operation Castle Bravo at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. THere, he witnesses the most powerful nuclear device ever detonated by the US. He said that although he was 30 mile from the explosion and it was in the middle of the night, the sky was bright as day.
When he returned from service, he continued working for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. In 1963, he established a home building and land development business. After 44 years, he retired from Union Pacific Railroad, but continued his building business, overseeing the construction of more than 600 homes in Anderson County.
Kenneth was interested in many things and was constantly learning- history, architecture, traveling, reading, investing and outdoor activities.
Devoted to his family, he took care of his parents until their deaths. He and his wife, Berniece, shared more than 60 years of love together, supporting and caring for each other. He was very close with his daughter, Carla, of whom he was immensely proud. Kenneth enjoyed the relationship he had with his son-in-law, Jonathan, teaching and learning from each other. His granddaughters, Caroline and Catherine, remember many good times traveling, hiking and lighting fireworks on the fourth of July with him.Preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Howard Wesley Calloway and Robert Wayne Calloway.
He is survived by his wife, Berniece Hearn Calloway; daughter and son-in-law, Carla and Dr. Jonathan D. Leffert; granddaughters Caroline and Catherine Leffert and other extended family.
