Dell was born in Steep Hollow, Texas, a Brazos County community about six miles from Bryan, Texas, the fifth of six children born to the late Tolbert Eugene Bullock and Carrie Elizabeth (Powers) Bullock. She graduated from Bryan High School in 1934 and attended 4-C College in Waco to prepare for secretarial work. In 1936, however, she married Alonzo P. Cawley and became a very successful homemaker. She resided in Waco more than 65 years. Dell was an excellent housewife and mother. She raised three sons, participating in their many activities and encouraging all to obtain college degrees. She was a Christian and long time member of North Waco Baptist Church and was quite active teaching young people and adults as well as serving in the Women's Missionary Union. Her civic and church activities were numerous. During World War II, when her husband was serving in the Pacific, Dell supported her family by working midnight shifts in a defense plant near McGregor. Her devotion to her husband and sons was unwavering; her friends and loved ones will never forget this attribute.
Dell was preceded in death by her husband, Alonzo P. Cawley; and all of her siblings.
She is survived by sons, Richard Cawley, of Tyler, Donald Cawley, of Belton, and James Cawley, of Austin; as well as six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 10 nieces and nephews.
