Harold was born to Edwin Ernest Jabez Coate and Bessie Coate of 3 Westcote Road, Streatham, London. He was killed in the Battle of Greece while serving with the 9th Battalion (1st Battalion "The Rangers"), King's Royal Rifle Corps.

Harold's brother Ernest was killed three years later in a V-1 flying bomb attack in Islington.
