Mr. William Mirl Austin, age 82, died peacefully early Sunday morning, August 2, 2020. Mirl was born August 22nd, 1937 in Raleigh, NC to the late William Wesley and Kathryn Andrews Austin.

He was preceded in death by his sister Barbara (Bobbi) Austin Woerner, and his wife of 20 years, Peggy Austin-Rees.

Mirl is survived by his children, Debra Austin of Richmond, VA, Kathryn Brantley (David) of Four Oaks, NC, and William Mirl Austin, II of Henrico, VA, five grandchildren, Austin (Tracy), Thomas (Ashton), Victoria, Elizabeth and Willie, and 4 great-grandchildren.

Mirl is also survived by his younger brother, David (Michelle) of Tocoa, GA.

Mirl attended Hugh Morrison High School in Raleigh, NC until his enlistment in the United States Navy on April 25th, 1955. He was honorably discharged in June 1972, having attained the rank of Lieutenant. Mirl served on the ships U.S.S. Fletcher, U.S.S. New London County during the Vietnam war, the U.S.S. Hyman, and the U.S.S. Putnam.

Mirl graduated December 1977 with honors from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in Business Management. In July 1983, Mirl was board certified as an optician and hearing aid specialist in the state of Virginia.

Mirl retired from his optical career at the age of 64 and joined the U.S. Peace Corp. He served from 2001 - 2004 in Timisoara, Romania as an administrator, translator and editor for a non-profit dedicated to eradicating domestic violence and human trafficking. He was a frequent lecturer at West University and Polytechnic University in Timisoara. In 2002 and 2004, Mirl was honored as the "International Volunteer of the Year" by the Timisoara Chamber of Commerce.

Returning to the United States Mirl resumed a part-time optical career.

Mirl was civically active throughout his life. His associations included the Lions Club, Wards Corner Business and Professional Association, the Rotary Club, and the Tarboro-Edgecombe Chamber of Commerce. In addition, Mirl was a Master Mason (320), and a member of Raleigh Lodge 500; and was a founding member of the State College Lodge. He served in a distinguished manner as lodge secretary for each lodge prior to his death.

Mirl was an avid reader, a licensed HAM radio operator, and ordained deacon.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the North Carolina Masonic Foundation.

A 2pm memorial service is planned for August 15th at Oliver's Grove Baptist Church in Four Oaks, NC.
