Al Jacques Horton, 88 of McAlester, passed away on Thursday, August 6, 2020 at McAlester Regional Health Center.
Family will receive friends on Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Al J. Horton Event Center at 1 V. Hubert Smith Dr. in McAlester. Graveside services will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, August 11, 2020 at Bache-Red Oak Cemetery Pavilion with Bettye Lou Bunch officiating.
Al was born on January 22, 1932 in Russellville, Alabama to William Wesley and Phoebe Helen (Byars) Horton. He graduated from Russellville High School in Alabama and attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, Oklahoma. He married Lona Smith on October 14, 1951 in Sulphur, Oklahoma. He served as Sergeant in the United States Marines during the Korean Conflict.
He and Lona opened Dixie Liquor Company in 1966 whose success never would have been possible without the help of their life-long best friends JR and Marie Ricks, and later on the business, Jim Pettigrew. He was highly involved with the Boys & Girls Club organization, being past president and longtime board member,receiving many award throughout the years.
One of Al's proudest accomplishments came from his involvement in breeding and running throughbred race horses. His entire family and many friends enjoyed the success of his most popular horse, the great Silver Goblin who was named Horse of the Centuary in Oklahoma and won Al Breeder of the Month from ESPN.
He loved to garden and enjoyed sharing his prized tomatoes and peppers with his many friends.
Survivors include his wife, Lona Horton; daughter Stacey Kay and spouse, Jimmy Camp; brother, William Max Byars Horton; two sister, Dene Kilgore and Bettye Bunch and husband, Ken; grandson, Joey Kuykendall;5 great-grandsons, Hunter and Easton Kuykendall, Lane and Grayson Mass, and Kaden Teafatiller, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Wesley Horton and Phoebe Helen (Byars) Horton; sisters, Francis Goodman and Ruth Cooper; mother and father-in-law, Abe and Bertie Smith; 3 brothers-in-law, Bobby Kilgore, David Smith and Bill Bivens;1 sister-in-law, Geneva Bivens; and one of the most special people in his life, Tommy Dale Ricks.
Active pallbearers will be Wesley Bivens, Phillip Bivens, Jim Pettigrew, Gary Huffman, Glen Thompson and Terry Green. Honoary pallbearers will be JR Ricks, Rick Potts, Max Farley, Mike Greeson, Benny Brooks, Lyndon Branch, Dale Cordova and Tim Doocy.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of McAlester.
