The collision of two small planes over Morgan Hill sheared a wing off one plane and caused a fiery crash that killed a student pilot and his instructor, officials said. But two people in the other craft landed safely.
The damaged plane, a Cessna 192, slammed into a small, plowed field a few hundred feet behind a mobile home park about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Its occupants, a 22-year-old man from Los Altos and a 35-year-old woman from Palo Alto, were pronounced dead at the scene, both still strapped to their seats inside the wreckage. The Santa Clara County Coroner's office identified the man as student pilot Carl Alper. Authorities declined to release the name of the woman until relatives had been notified. The loss of the craft's left wing in the collision apparently send the plane spiraling downward Freeze said.
