Consort of Allison W., 24 yrs, 11 mos

Frances Elizabeth Tipton was the daughter of Shadrack Tipton and Mary Ann Davanay and the first wife of Alison Woodville Baker. They were married in Madison County on April 2, 1860 and they had one daughter, Rosa Leah Baker (b: 17 APR 1861 d: 7 DE#C 1936). The family story is that Alison was a POW at Rock Island IL. When the war was over, all prisoners had to sign a Pledge of Allegiance before being released. Alison and another man refused to sign. Everyone left Rock Island to go home EXCEPT Alison, his comrade and two Yankee Guards. After several months, the Yankees were anxious to go home... so they let the men go. An old house slave, Pete Baker, took Alison's horse to Decatur AL to meet his train. Only then did Alison learn of his wife's death. (Contributed by C Baker)
