Joseph "Joe" Adkins was born on June 20, 1894 in Tennessee, and he was the son of Silas Wright Adkins (1844–1917) and Nancy Carolyn (Walker) Adkins (ca 1860–1909).
Joe married Stella Elizabeth Hankins (1901–1995) on July 9, 1917 in Houston County, Tennessee.
The superintendent at the state prison soap factory and living at 4901 Tennessee Avenue in Nashville, he was 66 years old and married when he died August 27, 1960 at home of uremia and kidney failure due to multiple large branching stones in both kidneys. Burial was two days later in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Donelson.
