Vardan was the son of the noted Armenian author Khachatur Abovian and Emilie Loose. When Vardan was not yet eight years old, his father mysteriously vanished, and so he and his sister were raised by their mother. Vardan studied at Tbilisi's Nersisyan School. For a time he taught Russian language, history, and painting in Estonia, but in 1869 at his mother's request he returned home and became a teacher in the town of Akhalkalak, present day Georgia. His mother died the following year and in 1875 Vardan moved to Etchmiadzin (Vagharshapat) where he taught at Gevorgyan Seminary for five years and then worked at schools in Yerevan. Vardan Abovyan married Katarine Yaralyan-Abovyan. They had eight children, of whom Khachatur, Vahan and Petros died in childhood. The remaining three boys, Konstantin, Levon, and Ashot and two daughters Shushanik and Victoria were raised and educated by their mother after Vardan's death in 1896. He is buried in the cemetery adjoining St. Gayane Church.
