Alda Exline was born in West Virginia, a son of John M Berkeley Exline 1867–1960 and Hattie Belle Bartlett 1870–1945. He had a brother Coy 1897–1987.

His family lived in Pleasant, West Virginia and were farmers.

Alda attended high school in Philippi, West Virginia, Broaddus College and West Virginia University.

Alda married Winnifred Peck in 1916 in Harrison, West Virginia. They had a son James Robert 1921-1964.

He was a senior Industrial engineer for Goodyear in Akron, Ohio. He was promoted to an industrial engineer's position in 1943 after completing special work at Goodyear Aircraft, and promoted to senior industrial engineer in 1950.

He was in Goodyear's plant planning and methods department and and the plant efficiency department, doing the company's time study work. He also worked in the suggestions program. He was also a graduate of Goodyear's squadron training program.

After Winnifred died in 1957, he married Helen Woodfell Gunsaulus in 1959 in Akron.

They retired to Tucson, Arizona.

He was a member of Joppa Lodge 666, F&AM, and the Ellet Lions Club.

Alda was survived by his wife Helen; son, James R. of Stow, Ohio; a grandchild, and a brother, Clay B. of Akron.
