COSSAYUNA – Elijah Clough

The death of Elijah Clough, the oldest resident of this vicinity, occurred Saturday noon at his home near Cossayuna after a short illness. A prayer service was held Tuesday at 1:30 at the house and the funeral was held at 2:00 o’clock at the Lakeville Baptist church. The pastor, Rev. Jessie Phillips, officiated. Burial was in the family lot in Prospect Hill cemetery at Argyle.

Elijah Clough would have been ninety-two years old had he lived until September 2. He was born in the Town of Salem, a son of Elijah and Ann Eliza Chamberlin Clough. When he was twenty-four years old he bought the farm in the Rock Hill district where he has since lived. About two years later he married Miss Anna McEachron of Argyle, who died when a young woman, leaving her husband and a son and daughter, Fred Clough who has always lived with his father, and May Clough, who died about five years ago. Nieces and nephews are the only other relatives surviving.

The Clough family had been actively interested in the Baptist church since its organization in 1834, and in 1878 when a history of Washington county was compiled, Mr. Clough was serving as clerk, and in 1892 he was elected deacon. He had also been superintendent of the Sunday school for many years. Mr. Clough had always a most retentive memory and in spite of his advanced years was a constant reader up until his last illness which was of short duration, and he retained all his faculties to a marvelous degree.
