Death of Mary
Elizabeth Hirst]
-----
Mary Elizabeth Marriott was born at Milford, Ohio, September 9, 1839 and grew to womanhood on a farm near the above named town, and finished her education in this community. At the age of 35 years she moved to Milan, Illinois. After some time she was united in marriage to Patterson Hirst, after which they came to Nebraska as early pioneers in 1874, making their home in St Paul, going through all of the harships (sic) of the early pioneer days

There were no children born to this union. In the month of May, 1886, the home was broken up by the death of her dear companion, and she was left to battle life's problem, with three step children, one of whom is still living, Frank Hirst, who has been with her during her last illness. While Grandma Hirst had no children of her own, she took all the responsibility of a mother raising two children; one a nephew, Louis Marriott, whom she took as a boy of eight yeas, caring for him as a mother, until he grew to manhood. He passed away at Grand Island, in Jun 1928. The other a daughter of Frank Hirst, was left motherless at the age of five months, Lu Hirst, now Mrs G. E. Martin of Edgar, and knew her as her only mother.

For the past twelve years she has made her home with her stepdaughter, Mrs G. E. Martin. For the past 4 months she has been an invalid, as the result of falling and fracturing her hip bone from which she never recovered sufficiently to be able to leave her bed. Everything was done for Grandma Hirst, that skilled physicians and kind nursing could do but all in vain. During all of her suffering she was patient hopeful and always cheerful, and never a word of complaint until the end came last Sunday, December 22, 1929, being 90 years, 3 months and 18 days of age.

Early in life Mrs Hirst confessed her faith in Christ and lived a beautiful Christian life and died with a triumphant faith which will meet with no denial from Him who doeth all things well. She cast her lot with the Presbyterian church and was one of the charter members at St Paul, Nebraska, having taken a very active part in the building up of the church at that place. Her life has been as an active book to all those who knew her and her many acts of kindness and love will live on in the memories of those who were blessed by them.

Her funeral services were held on Tuesday morning at 10:30, at her late home at G. E. Martin's by the pastor of the Christian church assisted by Rev T. S. Hughes, pastor of the Presbyterian church (sic) of Edgar, Nebraska, The music was furnished by a mixed quartet with Mrs Ralph Sconce at the piano. The floral offerings were very beautiful, which speaks of the high esteem in which she was held.

She leaves to mourn her loss, one stepson, Frank Hirst, one greatgrand stepson, Roy Martin, two step granddaughters, Miss Merle Hirst of Chicago, Ill. and Mrs G. E. Martin of Edgar Nebr.; one step grandson, Edward Hirst of Cheyenne, Wyo., besides many relatives in the east and a host of neighbors and friends.

May the bereaved ones have the strength for this sad experience in life are the wishes of the writer and also her many friends Interment was made in the St Paul cemetery, beside her companion who was laid to rest as above mentioned.
