Unknown soldier, most likely a Union soldier. Chattanooga has a Confederate Cemetery a few blocks from the National Cemetery. The National Cemetery was formed due to the large number of Union casualties during the battles for Chattanooga. Most Union soldiers were left lying on the field of battle until after the war, while Confederates were sometimes buried in mass graves.

Section S has veterans of numerous wars from the 1860s through World War II. The cemetery office has no data on this veteran except that he was discovered in a copper casket when digging for a new plot.(Note by J.Sims)
