Sister Elizabeth Marie Casey OP, 74, of Sacred Heart Convent, died peacefully at the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse in Springfield on January 22, 2007.

Sister Elizabeth Marie, the oldest of eight children, was born in Jacksonville on March 27, 1932 to James and Alma Connolly Casey. When she was three, the family purchased a farm in Murrayville. She graduated in 1949 from Sacred Heart Academy, Springfield (where she had been a boarder) and was accepted as a postulant by the Springfield Dominican Sisters one month later. Sister professed her vows in 1951.

Sister Elizabeth Marie (also known as Sister Mary Louis) taught primary grades in Catholic parish schools for 42 years. In the Springfield Diocese, she taught at St. Agnes, Springfield (1957-1963 and 1983-1987); Our Lady Queen of Peace, Bethalto (1982-1983); and St. Thomas, Newton (1989-1991). Sister also taught in the dioceses of Joliet, Peoria and Rockford and in the archdiocese of Chicago. She was a pioneer at LaSalle Catholic School in LaSalle.

In 1993 Sister Elizabeth Marie returned to the motherhouse so she could be closer to her parents whose health had begun to fail. During this time she enjoyed sewing for the sisters in the infirmary. Sister was gifted with a flair for art, and she also enjoyed caring for plants.

Sister Elizabeth Marie was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Patricia Brown. She is survived by her brothers Tom (wife, Joyce) and Paul (wife, Rachel) of Murrayville and David (wife Kaye) of Jacksonville; her sisters Agnes (husband, James) Gaw of Elmhurst, Frances (husband, Bob (deceased)) Lawless and Janet (husband, Paul) Hansen of Franklin; brother-in-law Walt Brown of Jacksonville; several nieces and nephews; and by her Dominican Sisters with whom she lived and ministered for 57 years.
