Cevern Orlando Girt was born February 1, 1922 to Earl O. Girt and Mary (Deal) Girt in Rainier, Oregon. He graduated from Rainier High School in 1940 where he was a member of the varsity football team and HI-Y. The family relocated to the Nehalem Valley area in 1940. Cevern enlisted in the Navy in September of 1942 and served in Honolulu, Hawaii as a Torpedo Man 1st Class. In 1946 he married Veda (Rierson) Girt who preceded him in death in 1997. They had two daughters.

Cevern was involved in the lumber industry his entire life. He was an excellent logger and woodsman. In the 1950's Cevern, his father and brother opened Seaside Planing Mill at the mill ponds along Neawanna Creek. A shingle mill was later added and both mills operated into the 1960's. Cevern was active in the Elks, Mason's and Shriners, taking great joy in being a Shriner Circus Daddy. He also served as a volunteer for the Seaside Fire Department and was on the Seaside City Council for a time.

During his continuing work years, Cevern was employed as a long-pole buyer and logging consultant for several companies, one firm being Evergreen Aviation, where he was instrumental in helping to develop the helicopter logging division. His work took him to many parts of the United States, and even to South America. He retired from Weyerhaeuser in 1997.
