Carl R. Beer, Former School Principal Dies
Carl Reginald Beer of 331 Cherry Tree Circle, died at his home on Thursday evening after a short illness.
He was born at Ten Mile Village, W. Va., a son of Arthur W. and Icy Bennett Beer. He was educated in Upshur County Schools, W. Va., and received his BA degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College and his MA degree from West Virginia University.
Mr. Beer was employed in the school systems of Upshur and Berkeley Counties, W. Va., for 18 years, after which he moved to Hagerstown and Washington County where he served as a teacher at Smithsburg, a principal at Surrey School and was the first principal of South Hagerstown High School.
Mr. Beer was a supervisor of elementary schools and a high school supervisor for Washington County. He was principal of the Washington Junior High School, when he retired in 1965.
Mr. Beer had been an active church member, both in West Virginia and in John Wesley Methodist Church in Hagerstown. He was also active in the Hagerstown Exchange Club, where he was a charter member.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Vada Tenney Beer; daughters, Mrs. Howard Weeks of Hagerstown, Mrs. N. Thomas Whittington of Marion, Md.; son, Col. Carl Neil Beer, serving in the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Norman, Okla.; eight grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. Bert Koon of Tallmanville, W. Va., Mrs. Eula Koon of Buckhannon, W. Va.; brothers, Theodore W. Beer of Akron, Ohio, D. Ray Beer of Buckhannon W. Va.
Services will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at John Wesley United Methodist Church. The Rev. William E. Firth, Cyril J. Hoover and Wilbur S. Hogevoll will officiate; burial in Rest Haven Cemetery.
Family will receive friends at the Minnich Funeral Home on Saturday evening from 7 to 9.
The family requests the omission of flowers, and memorial donations may be made to the Heart Association of Western Maryland, or the Scholarship Fund of the Hagerstown Exchange Club.
Pallbearers will be members of the Hagerstown Exchange Club.
