Rocky Mountain News (CO) - October 17, 2001 --DAISY I. HUGHES, 93, of Denver died Oct. 12. Mrs. Hughes was born in Cortez, NM on April 12, 1908. She was a homemaker. Survivors include sons Harry and Robert of Denver; sister Betty Snow of Durango; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
-----------
A few months before grandma died, I was visiting family in Denver when dad and I went to see her at the nursing home. She'd lost a lot of weight and was frail and tired, but she was cognizant and lucid. After a while I told her we were going to get going and she asked, "Why?" Her question caught me off guard and I realized that I hadn't spent nearly enough time visiting someone who didn't get to see family often, and I laughed at myself and said, "You're right; we don't have to leave so soon." During the next few minutes I laid next to her in her bed and she told me something that didn't mean as much to me then as it did later. She said, "Tell everyone I love them and that I just got old."
I didn't remember her words again until just at the very end of her funeral when it dawned on me that I needed to tell everyone what she'd said. It was then that I realized that she intended for me to say it to family and friends at her funeral, and then of course everyone wept. I'm glad she trusted me with that message. It was a precious message.
