Ivory was a lumberman by trade, and later superintendent of a silver mine. He was the son of Ivory Libbey and Olive A. Pray. He married Nancy Hanscomb in York on 29 November 1852. They had at least eight children: Roscoe, Harvey, Dana (1863-65), Sarah, Dana (1867-1934), Mary, Hattie, and Lettie.

He enlisted as a Musician in the 8th Maine Infantry on 7 September 1861. He was discharged on 1 November 1862, at a time when the Union armies generally were phasing out regimental bands.
