James E Bartlett, 81, passed away August 18th, 2007. He was a veteran and resident of the Arizona State Veterans Home since February 2007. While there he was an advocate of proper care and treatment not only for himself but all residents. But with sadness the Commandant has gone to a great beginning of rebirth and freedom. Born July 12, 1926, son of rancher, muleskinner and pioneer, our father grew up quick from the farm to the oilfields as a 16 year old roughneck, then off to Germany he found himself a commandant of a German POW camp with 1200 German prisoners when he was 19. He respected the German people but not their government. Our father was a patriot, warrior, and survivor. After the war he returned home to the oilfields. He wanted a change, so like his father they packed up and moved to Arizona in 1961. He loved this new place with so much potential. In 1974 dad suffered an injury leaving him with a paralysis but dad pushed on and lived a good life in his own home until February 2007 when he needed a little more assistance. Our father was a horseman, a master mechanic, gunsmith, and knife maker. Our father had many friends and we want him to know that we miss him, love him, and he is forever with us and in our hearts. He is survived by Daughters O'Teka Bartlett and Stephanie Cowan, sons, James Bartlett Jr., Casey, and Lexington Bartlett. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren. Dad's ashes will be placed to rest on September 14, 2007, at 12:30 p.m. at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, in Phoenix.
