James Thomas was the son of Samuel Jefferson and Martha Louisa "Tarrant" Mordecai. He married Martha Ann Woods on July 29, 1880. They became parents of eight children, including their eldest daughter, Effie Lou [1881-1977], who married James Wesley Parker. Effie Lou and James Wesley are buried in Jefferson Co. AL.
