Charles was a currier in Charlestown, Massachusetts. He was a son of Phillip and Elizabeth (Oster) Heim. He married for the first time in 1867 at the age of 33, Elizabeth (Kissell) Marque, the widow of Peter Marque who had died during the Civil War at the second Battle of Bull Run. After their marriage, Charles was appointed guardian of Elizabeth's three children, Charles, Joseph and Louisa Paulina by the Middlesex County Probate Court.
