John was born in 1815 to John Benjamin and Elizabeth Cawley Lewis. The Lewis family immigrated to the Americas during the Great Migration from Wales in the 1600s. Arriving in MA , they migrated to Connecticut. They moved into the areas of Virginia and then the Carolinas, finally settling in Georgia. His parents are buried in the Holcombe Family Cemetery in Haralson County, GA. His son William J. Lewis (wife Mary Ann Long) are also buried at Little Vine, along with many other Lewis and Long family ancestors and descendants.

Gravesite Details

Both John and Elizabeth's gravestones were damaged. Elizabeth's originally was inscribed with 'Grandmother Lewis'; however, someone replaced the marker with another that says 'Grandmother'. The family plot had a foot marker with Lewis inscribed.
