Dinah was the daughter of John Lilley and Elizabeth (Boothby) Lilley. Her father was a framework knitter and a loom hand. At the age of 14, Dinah was employed at a worsted factory. By 1861 she was married, the mother of a son named Edward, and was also working as a milliner. She and her husband went on to have nine children.
