Inventor and Dentist. Thomas B. Welch, M.D. was the founder of the Welch Grape Juice Company of Vineland, New Jersey. In 1869 Dr.Welch discovered a method of pasteurizing grape juice so that fermentation was stopped and the drink was non-alcoholic. His discovery was the beginning of the processed juice industry. He persuaded local churches to adopt this non-alcoholic "wine" for communion services, calling it "Dr. Welch's Unfermented Wine." Welch was also known as a staunch prohibitionist who actively worked to reduce or end the sale of alcoholic beverages in New Jersey and other areas. Dr. Welch's business is now known as Welch Foods, Inc. and it is famous across the United States for grape juice beverages, jellies and related food products.
